Abstract
293,530. Royce, F. H. May 21, 1927. Fluid-friction vibration-dampers in which the flow of pressure fluid is controlled by a spring- loaded valve with an adjustable spring abutment, are provided with means for adjusting the seat consisting of a cylinder supplied with liquid from a continuously working pump, the delivery of which is regulated by a speed governor or by hand. Fig. 1 shows a vertical section through the vibration damper and Fig. 2 a vertical section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. The double ended piston b is reciprocated from a spindle b<3>, the two ends of the cylinder being connected, in order to make up for leakage, by one way valves d<3> to a central oil reservoir a<10> communicating with the upper chamber a<8>. When the piston moves to the right, liquid passes through the port d' and upwards past the valve c2 to the chamber C from which it is conveyed through passages d<6>, d<5> and d<4> to the left end of the cylinder. Movement of the piston to the left discharges liquid through the passages d<4> and d<5> to the underside of the other valve c<22> from which it passes upwards to the space c' and returns through the port d<8 >to the right end of the cylinder. The pressure exerted on both of the valves c<2>, c<22> is regulated simultaneously by movable abutments c<6>, c<66> for the upper ends of the closing springs c<3>, c<33>. The stems of the abutments are forced downwards by fluid pressure on the upper side of a diaphragm f, having circumferential corrugations and pressing through a central stem e<4> on a lever secured to a spindle e<2> also carrying other levers engaging the ends of the abutment stems. The pressure on the upper side of the diaphragm is maintained and varied by the apparatus shown in Figs. 6 and 7 through a pipe i<4> which is shown connected to two of the vibration dampers described above. A continuously rotating pump i draws liquid from the reservoir i and discharges it into the passage i<3> connected to the vibration dampers and through the spring loaded valve k<1> back into the reservoir. The pressure on the upper end of the spring k<3> and hence the pressure, in the pipe i<4> is regulated by a rod k<6> connected by linkwork to a speed governor or to a hand control.
