[Class 51(ii)] In a coke oven battery, the coking-chambers 1 are separated by heating-walls A each comprising two rows of vertical flues 3, 4 and a massive wall 5, e.g. sixteen inches or more in thickness, which strengthens the chamber walls to minimize the risk of warping under the expansive force of the coal being coked. The individual flues of the rows 3, 4, are separated by walls, e.g. six inches thick, which stiffen the outer walls against the pressure of the coke. The individual flues 3, 4 are grouped in known manner, in two sets by top headers 14, and are associated with rows of inner and outer regenerators 46, 47 which are so arranged that alternate regenerators are under the chambers 1 and walls 5, the intervening pillars 45 being under the rows of flues. The battery is provided with the usual basement through which air is supplied to the regenerators and in which supply pipes for rich and lean gas and the usual reversal arrangements are accommodated. When rich gas is used for heating the oven, air for combustion is preheated in all the inflow regenerators of all the regenerator rows, but when lean gas is used, it is preheated in the inflow regenerators of alternate rows, air being preheated in the inflow regenerators of the remaining rows.
