Abstract
Suspended carbon is removed from spent sulphuric acid by mixing it with a predominantly paraffinic hydrocarbon oil, allowing the p mixture to settle to form two phases, and separating the oil phase containing the carbon. Specified hydrocarbon oils are kerosene, gas oil, white oil and light lubricating oil. The acid treated may be that obtained by distilling diluted sulphuric acid in which olefins have been absorbed, the recovered acid being reconcentrated for further use in the process.ALSO:In the production of alcohols by absorbing olefins in concentrated sulphuric acid and distilling the diluted acid in countercurrent to stripping vapours such as steam, the spent acid is freed from suspended carbon by mixing it with a predominantly paraffinic hydrocarbon oil, allowing the mixture to settle to form two phases, separating the two phases and, after reconcentration, returning the recovered acid to the olefin absorption stage. The process may be applied to the conversion of ethylene, propylene and butylenes to ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and butyl alcohol respectively.
