Abstract

Secondary olefins such as propene and normal butene and amylene are separated from hydrocarbon mixtures by contacting with sulphuric acid of about 70-90, preferably 83 per cent concentration, and treating the acid extract with a gaseous or liquid paraffin such as propane, pentane or hexane having a boiling point at least 20 DEG C. different from that of the secondary olefin. The olefin is then recovered from the paraffin by fractionation. An extract of normal butene in 83 per cent acid containing 1 mol. of olefin per mol. of acid may be passed down a tower in countercurrent to propane gas at 30 DEG C. and normal pressure. The exit gas contains 25 per cent normal butene which is separated from the propane by fractionation. The extract leaving the base of the tower contains 0.2 mol. of olefin per mol. of acid and is recycled to the acid absorption stage. Alternatively, extraction may be effected with liquid pentane, the extract containing about 10 per cent normal butene. The extraction or stripping operation is effected at temperatures below that at which substantial polymerization of olefin occurs, generally at 0-60 DEG C.
