Abstract
598,510. Bearings. HAYWARD, D. C. Oct. 31, 1945, No. 28912. [Class 12 (ii)] [Also in Group XIX] Apparatus for rotating a rod-like member 8 so that it runs true about its longitudinal axis (see Group XIX) comprises a flexibly-driven shaft 5, to which the rod 8 is coupled, mounted in two spaced bearings 6, 7, the bearing 7 being remote from the rod allowing misalignment or adjustment of the shaft 5 so that the rod can be adjusted to run true, and the distance between the bearings 6, 7 being substantially greater than the length of the rod whereby a relatively coarse adjustment of the shaft effects a fine adjustment of the rod. The bearings 6, 7 are supported in a housing 2 carried by a support 1. The bearing 7 is mounted on a sleeve 11, having a bore of larger diameter than the rear end of the shaft 5, by a nut 17 which clamps the inner race 7a against a shoulder on the sleeve, and the shaft is supported in the bearing by means of a washer 16 clamped by a nut 16b against a shoulder on the shaft and a nut 16a which clamps the washer against a shoulder in a recess in the sleeve. The shaft 5 can be adjusted within the bearing 7 by releasing nuts 16a, 16b, and inserting a tool 38a within the nut 16a, as shown. The outer race 7a is engaged by a ring 19 pressed by compression springs 20 arranged between this ring and a further ring 18 engaging a shoulder in the housing 2. End caps 9, 21 retain oil in the housing.
