Abstract

596,596. Automatic control systems. SUBMARINE SIGNAL CO. March 19, 1945, No. 6871. Convention date, June 12, 1942. [Class 38 (iv)] Voltage.-In a system for ensuring that the output voltage of an alternator does not fall below a predetermined value, electronic means are provided to control the excitation in accordance with the terminal voltage. The Figure shows an arrangement in which alternator 4 is driven by motor 1 and has a constantly energized field winding A, and a second field winding B energized inversely as the terminal voltage in the following manner. A portion of the rectified output voltage is applied together with a voltage from bias battery 16 to the grids of double triode 15 which is supplied with line A.C. from transformer 8. When the output voltage is correct, the voltage drop in the cathode load resistor 22 of valve 15 is sufficient to prevent the striking of a thyratron 25 in series with the supplementary field winding B. When the output voltage falls, however, the current in 15 is reduced and the thyratron conducts for a corresponding portion of each positive half-cycle and appropriately increases the alternator excitation.
