Abstract

A textile colouring composition, particularly for printing, comprises a solution of a dye in an aqueous methyl-, ethyl-, n-propyl-, or iso-propyl-alcohol of at least 50 per cent strength by weight, thickened with a water-soluble methyl cellulose. Cellulose acetate dyes, acid wool dyes, direct cotton dyes and mordant dyes may be used. When dyeing cellulose acetate, there may be present also softening agents such as thiocyanates, di- or poly-alkylene glycols, thio-diglycol, tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, esters of hydroxy carboxylic acids and esters of di-or polyhydric alcohols or of di- or poly-alkylene glycols. Water-soluble methyl cellulose having a methoxy content of 22 to 30 per cent and a high viscosity is preferably used. In an example, cellulose acetate crepe fabric is printed with a paste containing Solway Green GS dissolved in a solution of water-soluble methyl cellulose in a 75/25 mixture of methylated spirit and water, and thiodiglycol, steamed and washed. In another example, cellulose acetate is printed with a solution containing a chrome dye, chromium acetate, ammonium thiocyanate and a solution of water-soluble methyl cellulose in methylated spirits and water, steamed and washed.
