Abstract
A knitted fabric article comprising synthetic linear condensation polyamide fibres, and having a moisture content not greater than its normal moisture content, is supported in a loose and unstressed condition, disassociated from any means for determining the shape, and is subjected while so supported to the setting action of substantially dry heat at a temperature within the range of 250 DEG F, to an upper limit approaching the melting point of the polyamide. For the heating, heat from electric heaters or gas flames, or electronic heating generated by high-frequency electric currents, may be used. The heat may be caused to affect the fabric by radiation, convection, or conduction. At the beginning of the dry heat treatment, the knitted nylon hosiery or other fabric article may contain its natural moisture content. The preferred temperature of the heat treatment is about 325 DEG F. The article may subsequently be subjected to a hot liquid treatment at temperature below the temperature range of the dry heat treatment, and may be reset to final shape in the presence of an aqueous medium and at a temperature higher than that of the previous liquid treatment, but below the temperature range of the dry heat treatment. During the dry heat treatment, nylon stockings may be impaled by the toes on needles mounted on conveyers so that they may be passed through the heating chamber. Subsequent wet treatments may include scouring, removal of fugitive tints used for marking, and dyeing. The final setting may be effected with saturated steam at 240 DEG F., the articles being supported on shaping forms. Specification 547,034 is referred to.
