Abstract
Polyethylene terephthalate filaments in tow or bundle form are drawn and crimped in one operation by passage from feed rolls through a heating zone, as may be provided by a hot surface, a bath of hot inert liquid or vapour, radiant heat, or radio-frequency heating, to draw rolls which have intermeshing but not necessarily contacting teeth and rotate at least three times the surface speed of the feed rolls: the draw rolls may be heated by means of internal electrical heaters or electric radiant heaters or hot fluids to maintain the rolls at a temperature at least as high as the temperature of the heating zone. The crimped filaments may be subjected to a heat setting or hot relaxing treatment at a temperature exceeding the drawing and crimping temperature.
