Abstract
589,951. Reciprocating pumps for liquids. PIPER, F., PIPER, J. R., and PIPER G. (trading as PIPER & SONS, F.). April 6, 1945, No. 8536. [Class 102 (i)] A pump for supplying lubricant and cutting liquid to the cutters of machine tools comprises a cylinder 10 submerged in a sump of the liquid provided with an outlet 15 from which the liquid may be delivered to the desired point, and :a hollow plunger 16 which is a close fit in the cylinder 10 to prevent the passage of liquid past it and has a non-return valve structure 17 to permit passage of liquid past the plunger on the up stroke and prevent such passage on the down stroke. The non-return valve consists of a disc 17 on the lower end of the plunger 16 and of sufficient diameter to close it, the disc being supported by a projection 18 thereon engaging a cross member 19 in the plunger. The disc is movable so that it will close the plunger on the down stroke and open it on the up stroke, to an extent adjustable by a set screw 20 bearing on the cross member 19.
