Abstract

588,965. Stabilizing ships. DENNY & BROS., Ltd., W., ALLAN, J. F., and BROWN BROS. & CO., Ltd. March 20, 1945, No. 7013. [Class 113 (i)] In a device for minimizing rolling, comprising tiltable lateral fins, each fin is composed of two parts 1, 2 hinged together at axis 3. Movement of the main part 1 about its axis 4, inclines the second part 2, through links 35, 37 connected to the ship's hull. In the zero position the part 2 is inclined slightly downward. The combined fin is extended from its housing by a hydraulic rani in the shaft 7, plates 51, 52 being provided to close partially the housing in the retracted and extended positions respectively. In a modification, Fig. 9, the normal bilge keel 47 is replaced by a series of fins 40, protected on their outboard ends by the plate 44, or by hooked and stiffened guards.
