Abstract
588,439. Haymaking; cutting and slicing. CHILTON, F. S. June 23, 1944, No. 12010. [Classes 5 (i) and 6 (iii)] Grasses and like crops, after cutting and before curing by the action of sun and atmosphere, are subjected to an operation producing incisions on the surfaces, particularly of the stems. The cut grass is drawn between a rotary drum having fins 26 projecting from its periphery and a fixed cylindrical segment 52 with fins 48 projecting inwardly between those on the drum. V-cross-sectioned threads are formed on the pins. The fixed pins are arranged in five rows P1 ...P5 the pins in each row being successively closer. A removal comb 54 may direct the grass to converging plates 62 from which it may be laid in windrows. The drum is driven in the opposite direction to the land wheels through chain and sprocket gearing from a motor M mounted on the frame. It may, however, be driven from the tractor engine.
