In apparatus for sorting pieces of sheet material according to their thickness of the kind in which the material is fed between rollers one of which is laterally movable with respect to the other, the sorting is effected by a deflector movable to either side of a central position by a pair of electromagnets controlled by a pair of switches responsive respectively-to opposite movements of the laterally movable roller. The rollers a, b between which mica strips to be sorted are fed, are mounted on horizontal parallel spindles carried in bearings f, j. The bearing f is formed on a support g secured to a base plate h and carries a spindle coupled to a motor i. The bearing j is hinged to the support by a vertical strip 2 located in slots in the bearing and the support, and carries projections p adapted to operate switches n through plungers o when the bearing moves from a position corresponding to normal spacing of the rollers. The bearing is loaded to urge the roller b towards the roller a by a weight 4 on an arm 5 secured to an arm 6 hinged to a lug. m on the plate h. A deflector r anchored to a spring strip s and arranged under the outlet guide g directs the mica strips into a central receptacle v if they are of normal thickness but is moved to left or right to divert the strips to other receptacles if below or above normal thicknesses respectively. Movement is effected by cores t of solenoids u controlled by the switches n. A pivoted finger 7 adapted to engage the side of a strip is adapted to operate a switch z controlling a solenoid f, Fig. 4, with a core z carrying a catch w<1> adapted to engage the strips a to lock the deflector in the correct position for the mica strip then being fed.
