797,097. Endless-belt elevators. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Sept. 21,1956 [Sept. 23, 1955], No. 27253/55. Class 78 (1). In apparatus for conveying letters discharged one by one from a letter presentation unit 2, Fig. 1, which may be constructed as described in Specification 716,231, to a selected station 3, 4 or 5 between endless belts 16, 9 and 28, selectively operable means, e.g. a pneumatically-actuated plunger 27 or 34, is provided at each station for positively displacing the belt 16 and one of the belts 9, 28 to direct a letter into a station. The plunger 27 is connected to a pivoted arm 26 on which a roller 25 is mounted. When the plunger moves to the right, the roller 25 moves the belt 16 from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2a. During the movement the roller 13, around which the belt 9 passes and which is mounted on a pivoted arm 23, is also moved so that a letter is directed into the space between the guides 6, 7 at the station and falls on to an endless belt 8. Belts 28 replace the belt 9 at stations 4, 5. Any letters not delivered to the stations 3, 4 or 5 normally pass into a discharge shoot 35, but if the plunger 34 immediately above the shoot is moved to the left, the roller 32 will also do so and the belt 16 will be deflected to direct the letters to the gap between it and the auxiliary belt 46. These letters pass into a stacking box 36.
