Abstract

727,927. Photo-electric pin-hole detectors. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1952 [March 18, 1952], No. 31759/52. Class 40 (3). In a photo-electric pin-hole detector in which sheets pass between a light beam on one side and a photo-electric cell on the other, the sheets then pass a second detector in which the illumination is from the other side. As shown, sheets from a pile 2 pass singly over a conveyer 6 between a light source 10 and photo-cell 12, and over a second conveyer 8 having a thickness gauge 20. At the end of conveyer 20 is a deflector 16 which is controlled by photo-cell 12 to pass sheets with a pin-hole to a bin 18. At the end of a further conveyer 24 is a deflector 28 operated by the thickness gauge. The plates are then carried up on a sloping conveyer 32 below which are permanent magnets 40 which hold the plates in contact with the conveyer, over an end pulley 36, the plates being held in contact by a further belt 48 and finally on the underside of belt 32 to which the plates are held by electromagnets 42. The plates are released when a photo-cell 52 detects their arrival at the lower end of the conveyer and de-energizes the electromagnets. Thus the plates fall on to conveyer 56 and are passed to a further pin-hole detector 66 with what was previously the trailing edge leading and inverted. This detector operates deflector 70, and a further switch-operated deflector 74 is provided to enable an operator to reject a plate after a visual inspection.
