Abstract
582,608. Shock - absorbers. GODFREY & PARTNERS, Ltd., SIR G., MILES AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and BURGER, F. E. July 19, 1944, No. 13809. [Class 108 (iii)] A shock-absorber particularly suitable for aircraft, comprises a chamber 11 containing air under pressure from the closed end of a piston rod 20, which slides in glands 21, 22 and has an annular piston 28 provided with restrictive means for the flow thereby of a fluid, preferably oil, contained in an annular chamber 13, and a bye-pass 46 controlled by a valve 49 which may be a needle valve or a non-return valve, which adjusts the damping during the stroke of the piston. The piston 28 has an annular groove formed by flanges 34, 36 containing holes which may be of different sizes and which are closed by a loosely-fitting split piston-ring located in the groove. Alternatively, the flanges may be unperforated and the ring unsplit but provided with grooves on both sides.
