Abstract
562,677. Shock-absorbers. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO., Ltd., and DOWN, C. R. March 30, 1942, No. 4231. [Class 108 (iii)] An oleo-pneumatic shock-absorber has a plunger with coaxial portions 19, 21 of large and small crosssection sliding respectively in fluid-tight seals at opposite ends of a cylinder 12, thus forming a collapsable annular chamber 35 which is filled with damping liquid extending also to a chamber 31 inside the plunger. The collar 20 uniting the two sections of the plunger has passages 34 allowing relatively free flow of the liquid to the chamber 31, but only slow flow through damping passages 40 in an annular valve 38 of cupped cross-section. A piston 26 in the plunger separates the liquid from the air chamber 32 and has a hollow closed stem 28 with a flared perforated easy fitting guide 30 sliding in the smaller bore of the plunger. Inlets 36 and 33 admit liquid and pressure air. In a modified form, the recoil damping chamber 45, Fig. 2, is arranged outside the plunger by having the collar 20 extended to form a piston in the cylinder 12 which is then relatively wider and the damping passages and valve are between the plunger and cylinder.
