Abstract
579,903. Wells. POLLAK, J. E. (Cameron Iron Works). April 17, 1944, No. 7104. [Class 85] [Also in Group XXIX] A blow-out preventer for wells comprises a body 2 connected to the well head and provided with chambers 5 normally closed by heads 7 provided with yokes 14 and each secured by four studs 8 and hammer lug nuts 10 ; the chambers 5 contain rams 27 connected by stems 20, cross arms 18 and rods 35 to oppositely moving pairs of double-acting pistons 41 in cylinders 38, the stroke of the pistons being such that, on disconnecting the heads 7, they may effect withdrawal of the rams from the chambers. Spindles 16 are threaded in the yokes 14 and may act through the cross arms 18 to close the rams about a well pipe, or to lock the rams. Each ram 27 is detachably and non-rotatably held to its stem 20 by means of a head 26 and a non-circular lug on the stem engaging slots in the ram ; a threaded socket 50 permits attachment of lifting means to the ram. Each ram has grooves 52 to receive lubricant, and a slot 61 in the lower part of each ram allows partial equalizing of well pressures thereon ; further, each ram has a packing 53 extending across its front face and along each side, and another packing 54, Fig. 6, of rubber &c. with a spring insert 57, packing 54 being sprung into a groove in the ram and engaging the ends of the side limbs of packing 53.
