An apparatus for suspending a string of pipes within a well comprises a suspension body 11 having an axial bore therethrough with a slip bowl containing first slip segments having second slip segments with faces adapted to grip a pipe mounted therein. The assembly comprises one or more sections depending on the number of pipes to be suspended; sections 11a and 11b, Figs. 1-3, being provided with individual slip assemblies 17a and 17b each capable of suspending a pipe string with the outer string 12 being suspended by welding at 18. A plurality of slip segments 26 are mounted within the slip bowl 25, the outer faces 28 having the same taper as the bowl. Slip keys 32 sliding in grooves 31 keep the segments in alignment within the bowl. Packing 33 is mounted in each segment 26, such that when' the segments are forced against the seat 36, the packing expands so that it seals against the bowl 25 and the suspended pipe and forms a complete sealing ring. Normally each segment 26 is maintained in its inoperative position by a shear pin 37. The segments may move radially within the bowl by means of bolts 43 sliding within slot 45 beneath the drive plate 42. Hydraulic fluid may be applied through port 52 which operates piston 47 connected to the drive ring 42. Auxiliary slip segments having serrated inner surfaces 54 and sloping outer surfaces 55 are slidably mounted within segments 26 and are normally held in a retracted position by means of spring loaded pins 60. Compression springs 64 urge the secondary segments downwards and simultaneously urge the inner serrated faces against the pipe casing positioned within the bore.
