Abstract

578,145. Cooling gear units. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and TUPLIN, W. A. Oct. 24, 1944, No. 20600. [Class 80 (i)] A gear unit, having a casing a cooled by air as from a fan c, is fitted with cowls b, baffles or equivalent deflecting or guiding members to prevent the cooling air acting on parts of the casing adjacent to the bearing housings. By this means the temperature of the oil in the bearings may be kept appreciably higher, i.e., its viscosity less than of that contained in the body of the gear unit which provides lubrication between the meeting faces of the gear teeth: loss of power due to oil drag in the bearings is therefore reduced.
