Abstract
577,950. Aeroplanes. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd., and HEPPNER, F. A. M. Dec. 31, 1941, No. 16833. [Class 4] An aeroplane is driven by a compact jetpropulsion unit mounted at the trailing end of a wing or other streamlined surface. Each unit 11 comprises a compressor 12, combustion chamber 13 and turbine 14, air being taken in at 15 and discharged as a jet through the nozzle 16. Two such units may be mounted at the rear edge of each plane, a streamlined buttress 18 being disposed between the front end of each unit and the top of the plane. Fig. 4 shows an aeroplane in which a single unit 11 is disposed at the rear end of a nacelle 19, the tail planes being supported by parallel struts 22. A flying-boat also is described with a single unit at the rear end of the body from which the tail plane is supported by parallel booms forming continuations of the buttresses 18.
