Abstract

576,142. Pliers and hand vices. BALL, E. D., and TAYLOR, F. G. March 6, 1944, No. 4156. [Class 61 (ii)] [Also in Group XXV] A toggle actuated hand appliance for use in welding clips, pliers, punches, cutters, embossing tools and hand vices consists of a pivoted jaw and a stationary jaw connected together by a hinge pin adjustably mounted in the stationary jaw, an actuating member hingedly engaged at one end with the pivoted jaw and a link connecting the actuating member to the stationary jaw. The jaws remain substantially parallel for various sizes of work. As shown, a jaw 1 of channel section is hinged to an L- shaped jaw 2 by means of a pin 4 which engages in slots 5 in the sides of the jaw 1, One limb of the jaw 2 is bifurcated to straddle the jaw 1. An adjusting screw 6 engages a screw-threaded hole in the pin 4 and an actuating member 9 is held in a recess 8 in the jaw 2 by a hinge pin 10. A link 12 is hinged to the actuating member and the jaw 1 by means of pins 11 and 13 respectively. When the actuating member and the jaw 1 are gripped the pin 11 moves over the dead centre position to close the jaws. An L-shaped member 14 is pivoted at 15 to the member 9, having one limb held colinear with this member by a spring 16 and the other engaging a hump 17. When the projecting limb and the jaw 1 are gripped, the other limb moves over the hump 17 toward the right, allowing the pivot 11 to pass beyond the dead centre position, opening the jaws. When the appliance is used as a punch, one of the jaws is provided with one or more punches, the other being provided with corresponding holes.
