Abstract

In a water-in-oil emulsion for use in painting, varnishing or lacquering, the continuous phase contains tall resin oil and/or one or several components derived therefrom, together with an alkyd resin and/or a drying oil. The tall resin oil may be partly or completely esterified with glycerol or with pentaerythritol, or may be hardened with lime, and the drying oil component may consist of tall fat acid esterified with glycerol or with pentaerythritol. "Tall resin oil" and "tall fat acid" are products obtained in the vacuum distillation of "sulphate soap," a by-product from the sulphate pulp process. Specified optional additions are turpentine, mineral spirits and lithopone. According to examples, coating-compositions comprise: (1) tall resin oil, a phthalic acid-glycerol resin, turpentine and water; (2) tall resin oil, an alkyd resin, one or more drying oils such as linseed oil, wood oil or esterified tall fat acid, turpentine or mineral spirits, lithopone and water.
