Abstract

575,081. Bearings. LUCAS, O. D. Feb. 28, 1944, No. 3612. [Class 12 (i)] A bearing unit for a shaft to be used in place of a ball or roller bearing consists of a unitary structure comprising a sleeve 1 rotatably mounted in a race 2 formed by a plurality of rings arranged face to face and each having a cut 4 therethrough to allow expansion, under load, against an outer cage 3 which encloses the race rings. The inner facing edges 9 of the race rings are bevelled to provide a lubricant channel for lubricant supplied through an aperture 5 in the cage, which aperture is in registry with the cuts in the rings to provide a duct connecting with such channel. The outer cage has spun-over end flanges 7, 8 to retain the race rings. The sleeve 1 as shown is selfaligning as well as rotatable. The race rings may be of a laminated phenol-formaldehyde resin and the sleeve of non-corrodible steel ; the race rings and sleeve may be treated with colloidal graphite to reduce friction.
