Abstract

573,447. Ball and roller bearings. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO., Ltd., WARDE, R. H., and BROWN, J. A. Dec. 10, 1943, No. 20722. [Class 12 (i)] A ball or roller race for thrust bearings subject to radial loads is divided into two parts transversely to the shaft axis, each part being divided into segments with staggered joints and the two parts being locked together against transverse movement. The locking means comprises dowels parallel to the shaft axis or interfitting ridges and grooves on the mating faces of the two parts, the ridges being concentric or radial. Each part may be formed in one piece with incisions which nearly sever it, being readily broken into segments just prior to assembly. Fig. 1 shows an airscrew hub wherein the blade shank 16 rotates on an arm 18 of a spider 20 mounted on the shaft 22, the shank having a shoulder 26 which engages the race 28 of a roller thrust bearing, the other race 30 engaging a flange 32 on the hub 34. The race 28 consists of two parts such as 38, 40, Fig. 14, each with incisions 46, the load at these points being relieved by easing the race surface as at 48, and the ridges being cut away as at 68. Where a roller cage is employed, this is also made in segments, together with the race 30 to facilitate assembly on the shank after formation of the shoulder 26.
