Abstract

1418907 Bearings ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 20 June 1973 [23 June 1972] 29695/72 Heading F2A [Also in Division F1] A bearing assembly comprises a rolling bearing 29, a housing 30, and a frangible member 42 connected either to the bearing or to the housing and disposed therebetween, wherein the member defines together with the bearing a first space 32 and together with the housing a second space 33, each space being adapted to contain a hydrodynamic squeeze film wherein one film is operable under normal conditions to damp vibrations between the bearing and the housing, and the other film is operable only after excessive forces on the bearing have caused fracture of the frangible member. The bearing is particularly for mounting a rotor shaft of a gas turbine engine, and the increased radial movement afforded by fracture of the frangible member is such as to allow inversion of the shaft. The member is frangible by virtue of two portions 43, 44 of reduced thickness formed by machining annular grooves 45, 46 in the member. Relative rotation of the outer race and the housing is prevented by the inter-engagement of dogs 34, 35. A plurality of frangible portions may be used to produce a radial stack of squeeze films.
