[Class 51 (ii)] In a continuous tunnel furnace A having heating and cooling sections a<3>, a<2>, the cooling is effected by air or gas supplied by a fan C to . horizontal pipes e, e<1> lining the roof and walls of the cooling section, the gas thus heated being utilized to augment the heating by burners B in the zone a<3> by passage through a further series of pipes e<2> which discharge into a saddleshaped header D<2> communicating with an uptake e<3> leading to atmosphere. A central header D<1> connects the adjacent ends of the pipe e, e<1> and e<2> and a further similar header D distributes the air or gas supplied by the fan C to the pipes e, e<1>.
