Abstract
491,052. Metal - heating furnaces. HOAK, C. B. Sept. 17, 1937, No. 25246. [Class 51 (ii)] A continuous furnace, more particularly adapted for heating metal strip, comprises a long chamber 9 having heating and cooling actions 14, 15, through which the strip &c. is passed in succession, the heating of the section 14 being effected by L-shaped combustion tubes 16 which alternate with similar cooling- tubes 21 arranged in an inverted position. The cooling-section 15 is similarly surrounded by two sets of cooling-tubes 25, 26, and each of the four sets of tubes is connected to a header and a suction fan. The chamber 9 has reduced necks at the inlet and outlet ends where the strip passes through water seals 32, and also at 10 between the heating and cooling sections. A non-explosive gas is supplied through the pipe 38, and the muffle atmosphere is circulated by a fan 41, withdrawal being effected at the charge inlet end through the water-jacketed cooling- pipe 39, and return through the connection 42 at the charge outlet end. The temperature gradient along the furnace may be controlled by dampers 20, 31 at the outlet ends of the heating-tubes, and the inlet ends of the cooling- tubes respectively.
