Abstract
414,166. Metal - heating furnaces. BRAYSHAW, S. N., and NEWMAN, F. C., 2, Mulberry Street, Hulme, Manchester. March 14, 1933, No. 7664. [Class 51 (ii).] Apparatus for the production and supply of a neutral or reducing gaseous atmosphere for use in metal-heating furnaces comprises a combustion chamber A fired by a gas burner G, the products of combustion being led by a conduit D over air cooling-pipes to condense the water vapour content and being then reheated in a pipe F within the combustion chamber A before delivery, through the outlet F<1>, to the furnace. A trap K for the discharge of the condensate is provided at the lower end of the cooler, while the air heated in the pipes E is taken off at E<1> for use where required. Silica-gel or other drying agent may be introduced into the return pipe H. Fig. 2 shows a modified construction having a flue M connecting the pipes E, F, outlets n, n<1> in the return pipe N, and valves 1-6 disposed as shown. When valves 1, 2, 3 are shut and valves 4, 5, 6 open, the apparatus functions in the same manner as that shown in Fig. 1, while, on reversal of the valves, the dried combustion products are delivered cold at n and highly heated air is available at n<1>.
