Abstract

568,029. Roofs; dormer windows. GEEKIE, D. Sept. 2, 1943, No. 14302. [Classes 20 (iii) and 20 (iv)] An arched roof for a dwelling &c. comprises semi-circular H-section beams 1 secured by cleats 3B on pillars 3, carrying timber joists wedged between the flanges of adjacent beams and positioned by struts 5 lying along the webs of the beams, Fig. 4. The roof covering consists of boarding 6 and asphalte &c. 7 and a gutter 22 of asphalte &c. is provided at wallhead level. A two-storey dwelling is illustrated and dormer windows extending to ceiling level in each storey are provided between two beams. These consist of vertical posts 8, 14 and horizontals 10, 17, for the lower and upper windows respectively and joists and intermediate posts to support the roof and boarding. The floors 25 are supported by gable and partition walls, a low wall 24 cutting off the angle between the floor and roof lines of the upper storey. The span of the roof may be increased by a straight section at the crown interposed between the curved members and supported on two partition walls. The ends of the joists may be supported at the gables by channel members. The inner surfaces may consist of lath and plaster or other lining.
