Abstract

Homogeneous plastic compositions are made by mixing at ordinary temperatures polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer thereof, e.g. with vinyl acetate and a plasticizer, subjecting the damp powdered product to such a temperature and for such a time as to ensure complete gelatinization of the particles without compacting them together and then subjecting the dry powdered product to a final mixing treatment to consolidate it into a compact mass. Plasticizers specified are tricresyl phosphate and dibutyl phthalate. Stabilizers, e.g. lead carbonate, lubricants, e.g. ethyl palmitate and colouring matter may be added. The pre-mixing may be effected in a Gardner type mixer and may take days at ordinary temperatures or half an hour at 150 DEG C. The gelatinizing step may take 3 days at 20 DEG C. to 1 hour at 120 DEG C. The final mixing may be carried out in an internal mixer or on mixing rolls heated or not, and takes only a few minutes for completion.
