Abstract

A composition suitable for making a porous plastic mass on gelatinization is made by mixing into a dispersion of a finely-divided polyvinyl compound dispersed in a practically non-volatile plasticiser in which the compound will not dissolve or will dissolve only slowly at ordinary temperatures while avoiding heating finely-divided ammonium carbamate. Polyvinyl compounds specified are polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinylidene chloride and polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate and vinylidene chloride. Plasticisers specified for use with polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride are tricresyl phosphate, phthalates of aliphatic alcohols or aliphatic ether alcohols of 3-10 C atoms, dibutyl sebacate, esters of phenols or aliphatic alcohols and long chain aliphatic sulphonic acids, methyl and butyl acetyl ricinoleate which may be mixed with chlorinated paraffin wax. Castor oil and white lead may also be incorporated. Soles may be made by heating such a composition in a mould. Specifications 500,298 and 573,841 are referred to.
