Abstract

562,550. Ships' hulls. GUNNING, M. F. Oct. 2, 1942, No. 13824. [Class 113 (ii)] The hull of a submarine or other vessel is made in at least three longitudinal parts A, B, C, of circular section, the longest part lying above and between two others disposed side by side, and projecting beyond them both fore and aft ; all of them are able to withstand water pressure. The uppermost compartment A may have loading and discharge openings at the ends. Plating F encloses the hull compartments, which communicate by passages. The upper compartment A provides living room and opens to the conning tower G. The lower compartments B, C, which have fore and after extensions B<1>, B<2>, C<1>, C<2> of less diameter, contain the engines, &c. propelling the screws J. Auxiliary compartments D, E contain the batteries and stores. Fuel tanks K extend over the midship section, and ballast tanks are disposed between and fore and aft of the lower hulls B, C. The bulkheads of the fuel tanks may be arranged to minimize the free surface of the ballast water during filling and emptying.
