Abstract
560,751. Pneumatic, rotary and screw conveyers. WESTBERG, E., and SWARTHE, L. L. May 18, 1942, No. 6706. [Class 78 (i)] Rotary pick-up and screw-conveyer means for introducing material such as saiid, gravel, grains, copra, &c., into a blast pipe line consists of a portable head 10 which is slung by hooks 60 to rest on the surface of the material located in the hold of a ship &c. A plurality of scoops 36 are arranged radially around a rotary member 30 located concentrically with respect to the head, the upper half of which consists of an enclosing casing 14 and the lower half of semicircular rods 22 spaced apart by a cross-rod 23, the grain, &c., on which the head rests having free access through the grill so formed to allow of it being picked up by the scoops 38. The scoop member is rotated from a motor 59 through pinions 57, 56, 52 and an inside toothed wheel 51 bolted to the member 30. Concentrically disposed within the scoop wheel is a fixed chamber 39 having a longitudinal gap 40 in its top line through which the grain, &c. in the risen scoops 36 drops, to be taken in hand by a more quickly rotating screw conveyer 64 disposed longitudinally in the lower part of the chamber 39. The transfer of the material to the chamber 39 is assisted by an air blast entering at 27 and reaching the scoop wheel through ports 29. The conveyer 64, rotated by a pinion 61 from the pinion 56, carries the grain toward the outlet 73, where it is taken up by air under pressure entering at 70 and passing by way of ports 71 to the inside of the hollow shaft 63 of the screw 64 to emerge by ports 72 into the outlet 73. A conduit 11 leads the air and suspended material to a suitable point of discharge.
