[Also in Division A4] A continuous process for cooking grain (e.g. maize) and seeds (e.g. soya beans) comprises feeding the grain through an inlet into a cooking vessel to the interior of which is supplied steam under pressure, moving the grain through the vessel to an outlet thereof, and preventing the escape of steam from the cooking vessel through the inlet to material not yet passed through the inlet. As shown, a suitable apparatus comprises screw feed conveyer 38, rotary trap 28 into which gas (e.g. air) under pressure is fed via conduit 31 to prevent escape of steam from the cooking vessel, cooking pipe 2 with inlet 27, screw conveyer 13 and outlet 57, rotary trap 58 and cooler 60 which communicates with blower 65 for extracting the hot gas and steam, and has outlet 63 which leads to a drier (not shown). The screw conveyers 38, 13 and 62 are electrically driven. Water is fed into cooking pipe 2 by conduit 48 and steam under pressure by nozzles 53 arranged longitudinally and circumferentially of the pipe 2. In other embodiments the gas under pressure may be fed to the housing of the feed conveyer; two traps may be present at the inlet end of the cooking vessel; chain conveyer means may be present in the cooking vessel; and the cooking vessel may comprise a plurality of sections superimposed one upon the other.
