Abstract
560,060. Refrigerating. YORK SHIPLEY, Ltd. (York Ice Machinery Corporation). Sept. 24, 1942, No. 13466. [Class 29] An evaporator particularly applicable to low pressure refrigerating systems using the refrigerant known under the Registered Trade Mark " Freon comprises an outer shell 11, an inner arcuate trough 46 spaced from the shell and containing refrigerant supplied below a grating 52 in the trough through a conduit 21, a bank of tubes 39 within the trough traversed by water, brine or other medium to be cooled, and groups of tubes 63 in the space between the trough and the shell conveying a portion of the refrigerant from the condenser of the system before it enters the evaporator, whereby the, vapour passing through the space between the trough and shell is superheated. The groups of tubes 63 are connected to arcuate tubular headers 58, 59 and are secured to the trough by straps, intermediate tube plates and angle brackets, and these tubes with the trough are inserted through one end of the shell and the end of the trough is welded to a ring 37 previously welded to the shell The tube plates 38 and the other end ring 37 are then fitted and brazed together and the end ring welded to the shell and to the trough. The tubes are then inserted and brazed to the plates. The tubes preferably have shallow annular fins- and have enlarged ends. Preferably the edge of the trough is provided with a curved baffle 48, Fig. 5, to cause the evolved vapour to pass around and below the trough to an off-take at one side. A medium other than the refrigerant may be circulated through the outer set of tubes for superheating the vapour.
