Abstract

556,382. Bulk evaporators. YORK SHIPLEY, Ltd. (York Ice Machinery Corporation). Sept. 24, 1942, No. 13465. [Class 32] [Also in Group XIII] An evaporator particularly suitable for low pressure refrigerating systems with centrifugal compressors comprises an outer shell 11 and an inner trough 15 spaced therefrom and enclosing banks of tubes 14 traversed by water or other medium to be cooled, the refrigerant or other medium to be evaporated being supplied to the bottom of the trough below a perforated plate 28 and in such quantity las to cover the tubes. The vapour formed passes over the edges of the trough and down the sides of the shell to ports extending a considerable distance along the length of the shell and communicating with an off-take 32, which may lead to the compressor. A stiffening ring 12, Fig. 4, is welded to the end of the shell and the tube plate 13 is welded or brazed to the ring. A heavy plate segment 16 is welded to the ring and a horizontal rib 17 is secured to or formed integral with the segment. Below the segment the tube plate is stayed by the tubes 14 and by webs 18 arranged as shown in Fig. 6 and welded to the trough 15 and to the segment and welded together where they meet. A multi-pass water box formed by the head 22 which is secured by studs 19, with intermediate packing 21, to the ring 12. The trough is stayed by radial webs 31, and intermediate tube plates are supported by pads 39 and angles braces 41. An eliminator 42 may be arranged above the trough and may consist of metal wool between wire gauze panels. A " superheater " comprising a coil through which a part of the liquid refrigerant flows on its way to the evaporator may be arranged in the vapour off-take or suction conduit. If lubricating oil is to be returned to the compressor with the vapour, the eliminator is not used.
