Abstract
<PICT:0658239/III/1> In an evaporator of the type comprising a shell containing a tube-bundle extending vertically between two spaced tube-sheets, wherein the liquid-to-be-evaporated is supplied to the interior of the tubes and the heating medium is supplied to the shell, non-condensible gases are withdrawn from the shell by providing a special central tube which has apertures disposed along a short part of its length immediately above the lower tube-sheet. In the evaporator shown, tube-bundle 14 extends between tube-sheets 22 and 24 in shell 10 which is supplied with steam through tangential connection 42. The steam flows over the top of baffle 36, and then down over the outsides of the tubes during which it condenses. The condensate is withdrawn through connection 66. The solution-to-be-evaporated enters the evaporator through connection 52, rises through the tubes and then enters vapour p disengaging space 12. The vapours leave through connection 56, while the concentrated solution is withdrawn through connection 58. The non-condensible gases present in the heating-steam pass from the condensing space through vertically-spaced openings 70 in central tube 68, and are discharged from the evaporator through conduit 71.
