Abstract

555,649. Mercury vapour converters. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 31, 1942, No. 4282. Convention date, April 1, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] In a mercury pool rectifier the metal envelope is in two parts 10, 11 welded together at the flanges 13, 14, and only the lower part is surrounded by a cooling jacket 38 detachably clamped thereon. Studs 49 resting against the flange 14 spaces the jacket accurately on the envelope. The surface of the envelope part 11 may be tinned to facilitate heat conduction. The mercury cathode 26 is restricted to a depression 29 in the bottom of the envelope, mercury being prevented from entering the exhausting tube 16 by a raised eyelet. The starting electrode 27 is carried by the conductor 31, which passes through the glass bead 33 on the eyelet 32. In a modification the upper envelope part is of larger diameter than the lower and a plate is inserted between the joining flanges, the plate extending into the discharge chamber and having an orifice for the passage of the discharge.
