Abstract

642,434. Metal-vapour discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 17, 1947, No. 30470. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] In a liquid-electrode discharge tube, the means for forming the cathode spot is surrounded by a baffle which comprises an axially arranged stack of dish-shaped annular members and a further member forming a continuous surface between the anode and cathode. In the preferred form, the baffle comprises a graphite dished member 17 and frusto-conical graphite rings 15 which are supported by a metal header 6 through insulators 13, studs 12 and graphite spacers 16. Controlling potentials may be applied to the screen through a lead 20, insulated by a glass bead 21 from the header. An ignition starter 8 has a lead-in 11 insulated by a glass tube from a metal evelet 10 in the header 6, which is welded to the steel container 1. A molybdenum ring secured by straps 24 to the header, limits vibration of the mercury and prevents foreign matter from flowing to the cathode spot.
