Abstract
553,761. Electric cut-outs. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and GIBSON, J. W. Feb. 16, 1942, No. 2048. [Class 38 (i)] An element of an electric fuse consists of a substantially uniform wire to which is attached, in close contact with part but not the whole of the wire, at least one metal body having a thermal capacity much greater than that of the part of the wire to which it is attached, and having a melting point at least as high as that of the wire. The element 1, Fig. 3, is a silver wire and the metal body 3 consists of a mass of copper. Additional copper masses 3<SP>1</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP> may be attached at each end of the wire in addition to, or in place of, the mass 3, there being in each case a length of wire exposed between the masses. The mass 3 may be made in two halves which are welded or hard-soldered around the wire, or the wire may be inserted in a slot cut in the mass and the slot then closed with hard solder or by squeezing the mass. A fuse so constructed may be included in part of a motor circuit in which an overload trip is provided to deal with normal overloads, the fuse being included in a part of the circuit through which an overload current will pass. Specification 462,577 is referred to.
