Abstract
639,824. Fusible cut-outs. HOPE, V. April 20, 1946, Nos. 12151 and 31437. [Class 38 (i)] To reduce the length of a bimetallic cartridge fuse having a single element, the element comp:rises strips 10, 11 of high melting point metal in series with a mass 16 of low melting point metal which is located in the casing near an end cap 23a, and is joined to it by strips 18, 19 of higher specific resistance than the strips 10, 11. The mass 16 is, preferably, coated with boric acid 17, and has embedded in it the separate ends 20 of the connecting strips 18, 19, which are preferably of a metal having four to ten times the specific resistance of the metal of strips 10, 11. The strips 10, 11 may be of silver and strips 18, 19 of brass, and are secured to the end caps, shoulders 24 being provided on the strips to locate the mass 16 within the casing. A neck 12 is formed on the strips 10, 11 to fuse on short-circuit, while the strips 18, 19 heat the mass 16 on prolonged overload. Specification 411,861 is referred to and the first Provisional Specification describes the application of the invention to the fuse described in Specification 514,522, [Group XXXVII].
