553,562. Lubricants for fibres and machinery. SHELL DEVELOPMENT CO. July 21, 1941, No. 9209. Convention date, Aug. 7, 1940. [Class 91] A lubricating composition for textiles comprises a mineral oil or a compounded oil of at least 20 per cent. mineral oil content, a partial ester of a polyhydric alcohol with a fatty acid containing more than 8 carbon atoms in the molecule, the quantity of the partial ester being not more than about 30 per cent. based upon the weight of the oil base, together with a soap such as sodium or potassium oleate, or a mixture of a soap and a free fatty acid, or analogous material such as the neutral salts of sulphonated oils, sulphated alcohols, and the sodium or potassium salts of aryl or alkyl aryl sulphonic acids. The presence of the partial ester enables the mineral oil to be easily removed from the textiles by subsequent washing. The partial ester may be derived from glycol or glycerol with oleic acid, ricinoleic acid, stearic acid,. lauric acid or the fatty acids from neatsfoot, olive, palm, peanut (arachis), coconut, castor or cottonseed oils. Glycerol mono-oleate, glycerol. dioleate, and glycerol mono-ester of the fatty acids of arachis oil are specified. The soap or analogous material is used in small amount such as 1 to 2 per cent. and the neutral salt of sulphonated castor oil is also exemplified. The mineral oils preferred comprise Technical White Oils and the oils specified for wool and artificial silk fibres respectively comprise Technical White Oils of viscosities 200-400 seconds and 40-300' seconds, Redwood 1 instrument at 70‹ F. in each case. The compositions may also be used for lubricating textile processing machinery.
