Abstract
552,694. Switch contacts. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Nov. 26, 1941, No. 15212. [Class 38 (v)] A switch adapted for large currents comprises two fixed contact members 10, 11 and a series of bridging fingers 12, 13, 14 which bear in a pivotal manner on a cylindrical conductor 18 forming part of the contact 10 and move into and out of engagement with the contact 11. The co-operating surfaces 18, 19 of the conductor 18 and the fingers 12, 13, 14 preferably have different radii of curvature so that a line contact is obtained in each case and the contacts on the fingers are spherical or cylindrical so as to produce point or line contact. By this arrangement, flexible leads to the fingers are dispensed with. The fingers 12, 13, 14 as shown provide main, transfer and arcing contacts respectively and are of different lengths. They are operated by the movement of two pivoted side plates 28 which are connected by three rods 33, 34, 35, and which pivot about axes in line with the axis 18. Springs 36 between the rod 34 and the fingers 12, 13, 14 hold the fingers firmly in engagement with the conductor 18 and other springs 38 provide the contact pressure. The rod 35 passes through holes in the fingers of various sizes so that the fingers are operated in correct sequence.
