Abstract

549,143. Levulose; sugar syrup. CORN PRODUCTS REFINING CO. April 1, 1941. No. 4386. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1940. Drawings to Speci - cation. [Class 127] Glucose in aqueous solution or in the form of liquors obtained from starch conversion by acids or enzymes or by hydrolysis of cellulose is converted into levulose by heating at 40-60‹C. with an alkaline catalyst such as oxide or hydroxide of calcium, barium or strontium; hydroxides of sodium or potassium, organic bases such as puridine, quinoline or soluble aliphatic amines or disodium phosphate. Syrups containing up to 50 per cent. of the sugar in the form of levulose may be obtained. Part of the dextrose may be removed from the converted liquor by crystallization. The conversion may be effected in the presence of a small amount of an adsorbent such as activated vegetable carbon. After the conversion with lime for 5 to 8 hours, the lime may be neutralized with hydrochloric acid or separated by sulphuric or phosphoric acids. The filtered liquid is evaporated in vacuo and decolorized by an adsorbent, and forms a substitute for invert sugar syrup. Specification 549,144 is referred to.
