Abstract
249,833. Commercial Solvents Corporation, (Assignees of Legg, D. A.). March 30, 1925, [Convention date]. Acetone.-In fermentation processes for the production of butyl alcohol and acetone from protein-free or protein-deficient carbohydrates soluble nitrogenous matter derived from maize is added to the mash as a nutrient for the bacilli employed. The nitrogenous matter may, for example, be concentrated " steep water " obtained by the digestion of maize kernels with weak sulphurous or other acids. Suitable carbohydrates are glucose, lactose, molasses, " wood juice " containing pentose sugars, " hydrol syrup " or starch. As an example, a mash containing 5-8 per cent " hydrol syrup " and 0.5-3 per cent concentrated " steep water " is sterilized by steam and is then innoculated at 98‹ F. with a culture of butvl bacilli, the butyl alcohol and acetone resulting from the fermentation being removed by distillation.
