Abstract

Waste cellulosic materials are heated with an alkali such as milk of lime for a few hours in an autoclave or for a few days in an open vessel at about 100 DEG C. The undissolved material is heated with dilute acid to produce a sugar solution which, admixed with the alkaline liquor from the first treatment, is fermented to produce organic acids, chiefly butyric acid, by known methods or as described in Specification 565,772. The undissolved residue from the saccharification which contains lignin is heated alone yielding coke, tar and other products, or is distilled dry with soda or potash yielding humic, succinic, benzoic and other acids, or may be heated with caustic soda solution, evaporated to dryness and heated with soda lime yielding methyl alcohol, ketones and acetone oil, or may be heated with caustic soda solution in an autoclave at 250-300 DEG C. yielding methyl alcohol, tar and sodium acetate.ALSO:Waste cellulosic materials are heated with an alkali such as milk of lime for a few hours in an autoclave or for a few days in an open vessel at about 100 DEG C.
