Abstract

542,943. Artificial filaments &c. ; resinous condensation products ; proofing permeable materials. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and WILSON, D. L. Aug. 2, 1940, No. 12528. [Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] [Also in Group VIII] Filaments, threads, and the like of polyvinyl alcohol are rendered more resistant to the solvent or other harmful action of water or aqueous solutions including solutions of acids and alkalis, by treating them with organic or inorganic acid chlorides. The acid chlorides may be used alone or diluted with a suitable solvent. Thionyl chloride, sulphuryl chloride, phosphorus trichloride, acetyl chloride, or benzoyl chloride, may be used. The process may be carried out in association with other treatments, e.g. treatment with formaldehyde solution. In an example, polyvinyl alcohol filaments are immersed in a solution of thionyl chloride in carbon tetrachloride for several hours. They are removed, washed in carbon tetrachloride and then in boiling water. They are rendered resistant to boiling water, boiling 15 per cent. sulphuric acid, 4 per cent. hydrochloric acid, strong ammonia solution, and 4 per cent. caustic soda. They contain combined sulphur and chlorine. Specification 542,942 is referred to.
