Abstract

Viscose rayon threads and fibres suitable for use as cord in tyres, are made by spinning viscose containing 0.05-0.25 per cent of quinoline into a bath containing sulphuric acid and at least 3 per cent of zinc sulphate, the weight ratio of cellulose to alkali in the viscose being at least 1.3 and the sulphuric acid content of the spinning bath being from 1.05-1.15 times the concentration of the alkali in the viscose. The preferred viscose has 7-8 per cent of cellulose and 5.3-6 per cent of alkali. The bath preferably contains less than 4 per cent of zinc sulphate, and sodium sulphate, preferably about 18.5-19.5 per cent, may optionally be added. The viscose is extruded into this bath at 60-80 DEG C., the threads so formed may then be stretched, and the resulting product is aftertreated, either continuously or discontinuously, in known manner.
