Abstract
Artificial silk of the lower denier numbers is prepared by spinning viscose solution into an "acid-salt" bath containing 1-8 per cent of ammonium sulphate or other ammonium salt. By the use of this bath a greater drawing-out of the filament is permissible. A suitable bath contains 20 per cent sodium sulphate, 7-14 per cent sulphuric acid, and 1-8 per cent (preferably 6 per cent) ammonium sulphate; the sodium sulphate may be replaced partly or wholly by another sulphate such as potassium or magnesium sulphate. After leaving the coagulating-bath the filaments may be treated, for instance in the guider-funnel, either with the same bath or with another bath or even with water; and the filaments are finally delivered to a centrifugal box or otherwise collected in yarn form. Ammonium sulphate may be recovered from the wash waters &c.
